NMFS Okays Increase in Bigeye Tuna Quota

The National Marine Fisheries Service has given final approval to a play to allow Hawai`i longline vessels to attribute part of their catch of bigeye tuna to Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa.

The proposal is now Amendment 7 to Wespac’s Pelagic Fishery Ecosystem Plan. Although the draft proposal was the subject of substantive criticism during the public comment phase, NMFS did not change any part of the proposal before making it final.

For details on the proposal, see the article in the April 2014 edition of Environment Hawai`i.
