Because members could not agree on proposed amendments to the Wai`anae Sustainable Communities Plan, the Honolulu Planning Commission decided on May 16 to forward a draft plan, prepared by the city Department of Planning and Permitting, to the City Council without any recommendation.

After hearing two days of public testimony that dealt mainly with whether or not the plan should include a new industrial zone on agricultural lands to accommodate a 96-acre proposed light industrial park in Nanakuli, only two of the six commissioners present at the May meeting (Beadie Dawson and Gayle Pingree) opposed the zone’s inclusion in the plan.

Had at least six commissioners opposed any of the Planning Department’s proposed amendments, a two-thirds vote by the City Council would have been required to approve them. If the council fails to take a final action on an ordinance adopting the plan by mid-August, the ordinance fails.
